Week 3 2012 Season

It seems fitting for me to open up this edition of 'The Lo Down' with one of the most inspirational pre game speeches from the great film 'Any Given Sunday' as this week a number of teams had their Sunday!

I know that I have been know to use this phrase a lot however the NFL never ceases to amaze me after some of the results that went down this week.

Before I get started on the weeks action I would like to take a moment to thank one of the sports great contributors for everything he has achieved in his life for us the regular football fan. This week the sport lost another legend in Steve Sabol of NFL films. Throughout his great career he has brought the game closer than ever to our hearts and for that I owe my never ending thanks, RIP Steve Sabol 1942 – 2012.

Please take a few minutes to watch this small tribute to one man's dedication to the NFL and it's fans!

Okay so lets get back to the action from this week and the big upsets that have happened this week. I think there is no better place to start than the ever increasing crisis that is brewing over the New Orleans Saints.

This week the Saints faced a week opponent in the Kansas City Cheifs who had been destroyed by my Bills last Sunday! Before the game I would have given Kansas two hopes of beating New Orleans and one of them is a star on Hollywood Boulevard!

The game itself was definitely a game of two halves as they say, in the first half the Saints had most of the play taking a 10 – 6 lead into the locker room. In the third quarter they stretched that lead to 24 – 13 and going into the fourth quarter there only looked like one winner.

Que the meltdown as in the fourth quarter Kansas scored 11 unanswered points with Brees not completing a throw in the fourth quarter or overtime. The chiefs managed to sneak this one in overtime 27 – 24. If you add this onto the big win they had against Green Bay last season you would have to consider them as legit contenders if they weren’t so inconsistent!

The other big upset out the bunch I would like to talk about is Oakland Raiders. This week Oakland had to face the mighty steel curtain defence of Pittsburgh fresh from their win over the Jets last week. Granted Oakland were at home for this one but I still did not expect what was to occur!

From what I saw of this game it was a hard hitting slug fest with the Steelers in particular laying some heavy and at times border line illegal hits on the Oakland receivers. This was most evident on the hit on a defenceless Darius Heyword-Bey who was hospitalised after a viscious helmet to helmet shot from the Steelers safety Ryan Munday. The worst thing after the hit itself was the fact that there was no flag on the play for the hit and it is becoming clear that the replacement officials are now endangering the careers and lives of the players.

If this isn’t a wake up call for the commissioner I don’t know what is, we need the proper league officials in time for next weeks games, this is no longer a request but more of an order Mr Goodell!

My apologies as I digressed a little there, again this was a tale of the fourth quarter as heading into it the Steelers were up 31 – 21. I don't know how but it's almost as if the Raiders had been watching the Al Pacino speech above at half time that they had 13 unanswered points to take the game 34 – 31.

These were not the only upsets this week but we shall discuss the others on this weeks episode of Spitball, my weekly podcast.

Here are all the results from the week 3 action:

New York Giants 36 vs 7 Carolina
St Louis 6 vs 23 Chicago
Buffalo 24 vs 14 Cleveland
Tampa Bay 10 vs 16 Dallas
Jacksonville 22 vs 17 Indianapolis
New York Jets 23 vs 20 Miami (OT)
San Francisco 13 vs 24 Minnesota
Kansas City 27 vs 24 New Orleans (OT)
Detroit 41 vs 44 Tennessee (OT)
Cincinnati 38 vs 31 Washington
Philadelphia 6 vs 27 Arizona
Atlanta 27 vs 3 San Diego
Houston 31 vs 25 Denver
Pittsburgh 31 vs 34 Oakland
New England 30 vs 31 Baltimore
Green Bay vs Seattle

(OT) = Final score after overtime.

Now we have all the results in it is time for me to go through this weeks nominations for the offensive player of the week (a.k.a Megatron Award) and the defensive player of the week (a.k.a Ray Lewis Award).

Lets start as always with the Megatron award. First up this week one player deserving of a mention all be it for one catch but given it's importance in taking the game to overtime, my first mention is Titus Young of the Detroit Lions for his touchdown catch following the tipped hail mary to send the game into overtime.

Another player to mention this week is AJ Green who not only opened the game with a 73 yard reception from Mohamed Sanu on the half back option play but went on to have nine receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown.

Maurice Jones-Drew also finally had the monster game I have been waiting for as he is in my fantasy team with 28 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown, he also had 16 receiving yards on the day.

Now time for the moment you have been waiting for, the Megatron award winner this week strangely goes to a quarterback by the name of Christian Ponder. Now I know that his numbers don't exactly set the world on fire but this award isn't necessarily for the best stats of the week.

For me this week Ponder really seemed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and he controlled the Vikings offence perfectly. His attitude and performance this week which included 198 passing yards for two touchdowns. For me it wasn’t his passing that caught my attention but his touchdown run that really summed up how much he wanted this win.

Congratulations to Christian Ponder you are the week 3 Megatron Award winner.

Now lets move onto the defence and I would like to start by mentioninig DeMarcus Ware of the Dallas Cowboys. In their victory over Tampa Bay the Cowboys defence held the Bucs to 10 points and Ware was responsible for five combined tackles including two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Next up for a mention is not just one player but the whole Arizona defence for the way they destroyed Michael Vick this week. Every time he dropped back to pass it was like he was under ridiculous pressure and indeed the Cardinals sacked him five times and forcing him to fumble with a wicked blindside shot which led to a touchdown for James Sanders. In total there were five sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.

This leads me nicely to the Ray Lewis award winner for this week which is the entire Seattle defence for holding the high powered Packers offence to just 12 points. Not only did they hold them to 12 points but they sacked Rodgers eight times. This for me is having a serious impact on the game and I congratulate them on being this weeks defensive impact winners!

On a final note I think we all saw how much controversy has been caused by the replacement officials in the Monday night game with not only the pass interference calls but the lack of them in the key moments as well.

The last thing I want to say about them no matter how much we all miss the NFL referees and how much of a serious concern I have over player safety as mentioned above, without these officials we would not have an NFL season to speak off at this point and ultimately that is what is important surely?

Remember if you have any feedback or just want to talk football please tweet me @AdriMallows or email me at ballhawksnest@gmail.com and of course please check out this weeks podcast on Wednesday night for the quick fire round up of week 3 and EJ's award winners!

Week 2 2012 Season

If someone was to say to me that the Arizona Cardinals would fly into Boston this weekend, man handle the Patriots and walk out with a win I would expect the use of the word 'Bazinga' at the end of their sentence!

This weekend however it is exactly what the Cardinals managed to achieve with their so called back up quarterback Kevin Kolb. I struggle to call him this after all the song and dance that was made following his trade from Philadelphia at the start of last season.

Kolb was hailed as the saviour of Arizona following his performances when Michael Vick was injured in the 2010 season.

Anyway back to the issue at hand and that is that New England lost a regular season game in Boston which as we all know is such a rare occurrence these days.

My cap is certainly tipped for the Cardinals in what was in my eyes the upset of the season so far!

It would also appear that the Cardinals weren't the only team in the NFC West that wanted to cause an upset this weekend. I am of course referring to the Seattle Seahawks who held the week one high flying Cowboys to just seven points!

For me it seems that all of the teams in the NFC West heard the pilot episode of 'Spitball' where we joked about how easy the NFC West is with the poor teams in it outside of San Francisco!

In this, week two of the season every team in the NFC West won with the Cards and Seahawks mentioned above and the 49ers and Rams also winning. To quote the legend that is Chris Kamara, that is 'Unbelievable Jeff!'.

My final word to the NFC West teams excluding the 49ers is that every dog has his day so let's see if you can do the same next week, come on prove me wrong you one week wonders!

Coming back to the AFC East it was a great week for my Buffalo Bills as we easily despatched Kansas City 35 - 17 with two Kansas touchdowns coming in garbage time.

With a big big smile on my face after a Buffalo win I say here are all the results from week two:

Chicago 10 vs 23 Green Bay
Kansas City 17 vs 35 Buffalo
New Orleans 27 vs 35 Carolina
Cleveland 27 vs 34 Cincinnati
Minnesota 20 vs 23 Indianapolis
Houston 27 vs 7 Jacksonville
Oakland 13 vs 35 Miami
Arizona 20 vs 18 New England
Tampa Bay 34 vs 41 New York Giants
Baltimore 23 vs 24 Philadelphia
Dallas 7 vs 27 Seattle
Washington 28 vs 31 St Louis
New York Jets 10 vs 27 Pittsburgh
Tennessee 10 vs 38 San Diego
Detroit 19 vs 27 San Francisco
Denver 21 vs 27 Atlanta

With the results out the way I think it only fair that we focus our attention to some of the play makers of the week. In keeping with the recent awards we used for my flag team, each week from now on I shall be giving out the offensive impact player of the week and the defensive impact player of the week. The awards are appropriately named the 'Megatron' Award and the 'Ray Lewis' award respectively.

Anyway back to the proper awards, on the offensive side of the ball there were a few stand out players worthy of a special mention. The first is Danny Amendola of the St Louis rams who despite and early fumble had 15 catches for 160 yards and a touchdown.

The next player worthy of mention is Marshawn Lynch who once again showed his awesome power and ability to break tackles. He finished the game against Dallas with 122 yards and a touchdown.

Finally before I announce the winner I have to mention CJ spiller who had a simply stunning game against the Chiefs. Spiller finished the game with 170 total yards and two touchdowns.  I hear you ask if I am not giving it a to a Bills player who could it be.......

The winner of this weeks 'Megatron' award goes to Dante Rosario of the San Diego Chargers. Whilst he only had four receptions for 48 yards on the day, three of those were touchdowns. If you ask me that's making an impact, 75% of his receptions were for touchdowns!

Moving swiftly onto the 'Ray Lewis' award my first mention is for the man whom the award is named after. Despite the fact he was on the loosing team this week Lewis managed a total of five tackles and a fumble recovery.

The next defensive beast on the list is Clay Matthews who was a constant nightmare for the Bears on Thursday night as he made a total of seven tackles, four of which were sacks on Jay Cutler!  Brandon Browner, cornerback for the Seahawks is my final mention before the winner for his performance against the Cowboys by making four tackles, forcing a fumble and picking off Romo once.

This week my 'Ray Lewis' award goes to Calais Campbell defensive end for the Cardinals who recorded 10 total tackles including two sacks as he helped contain and destroy Tom Brady!

Completely un Brady related I heard an amazing stat this week and that is that 14 of the 16 games were won by the home team. I have never known home advantage to play such a big part in the outcome. I wonder if it was because a lot of teams having their first home games of the season, let me what you think might be the cause?

Finally I'm sure you would all agree that we are certainly getting our value for money this season and I can not wait for the action to start again on Thursday!
Before signing off please remember to check out my podcast 'Spitball' on Wednesday and as always if you have any thoughts or feedback please email me at ballhawksnest@gmail.com or tweet me @AdriMallows. Take care football fans and until next week I bid you adieu!

Week 1 2012 Season

1st Down

Hello and welcome to the week 1 edition of the 'The Lo Down' for the 2012 season.

I'm sure like me you think this off season has been far too long and are grateful to now have NFL back on our screens.  Before I get started on the action from this week here's a reminder of a few key moments from the off season!

Let's start with Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow, with Indianapolis not offering Manning a contract he winded up in Denver meaning that Tebow needed a new home which he got with the New York Jets.

Then we had the draft with the first overall pick, Stanford’s trigger man Andrew Luck being drafted by the Colts. You also had the Heisman trophy winning quarterback Robert Griffin III being drafted by the Redskins.

For any newish fans to the sport the battle that will ensue between these two great quarterbacks will be for me the Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning rivalry off the next decade at least. I can guarantee they will both be talked about in great detail through this season!

Finally before I move onto the action you had the Bountygate scandal!  For those who may not have heard the coaches from New Orleans had given their players specific targets on key opponents to try and re injure with the promise of a tidy bonus if they are taken out the game!

As a result of this Gregg Williams the defensive coordinator responsible has been suspended indefinitely, the head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for a year and other bans have also been dished out to other coaches and staff involved.

The big news is that several players also faced suspension however thanks to a recent judge panel ruling the bans have been lifted, for now anyway!

2nd Down

Okay with that now out of the way lets get started on the action from week 1.

Following the above warning I would like to start by talking about Mr Heisman Trophy RG3! In his season opener he faced the saints who were without head coach Sean Payton!

I'm sure that if you are anything like me you were not holding out much hope for RG3 with that high powered Saints offense and solid D.  It turns out that I was wrong on an epic scale as RG3 put on a clinic completing his first 7 passes which included an 88yd laser beam to Pierre Garcon.

The Redskins seemed to be playing like a team possessed! Drew Brees tried his best to spur on the offense but even the record breaking QB could not compete with this stallion as the Skins went on to win 40 – 32.

Another big result for me this weekend was the destruction of my beloved Buffalo Bills at the hands of Mark Sanchez, Tebow and the Jets! They came out of the blocks flying going up 28 - 0 before we even responded. The final score was 44 - 28 and we also saw Tebow line up at tight end, in the wildcat and as the QB for the first plays when the Jets reached the red zone.

3rd Down

Now I have finished my little bit of Tebowmania here is a run down of all the scores from week 1:-

Dallas 24 vs 17 New York Giants
Indianapolis 21 vs 41 Chicago
Philadelphia 17 vs 16 Cleveland
St Louis 23 vs 27 Detroit
Miami 10 vs 30 Houston
Atlanta 40 vs 24 Kansas City
Jacksonville 23 vs 26 Minnesota
Washington 40 vs 32 New Orleans
Buffalo 28 vs 48 New York Jets
New England 34 vs 13 Tennessee
Seattle 16 vs 20 Arizona
San Francisco 30 vs 22 Green Bay Packers
Carolina 10 vs 16 Tampa Bay
Pittsburgh 19 vs 31 Denver
Cincinnati 13 vs 44 Baltimore
San Diego 22 vs 14 Oakland

Other performances of note this week was the return of Peyton Manning after a year out with neck surgery. In the Sunday night game this week was the Broncos vs Steelers and I know the Steelers are rebuilding but I didn't expect the result we got shown above.

Manning had a very solid game throwing for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns with his key receiver being DeMaryius Thomas who caught 5 passes for 110yds and a touchdown, some of you may have heard me talk about him on Spitball my new weekly podcast!

4th Down

With the podcast in mind be sure to check out www.ballhawksnest.weebly.com for the new edition of Spitball which will be uploaded on Wednesday 12th September.

Lastly I would just like to say that this first week has been immensely entertaining and I've struggled to keep this edition down to just a handful of performances that have caught my eye this week.

If we consider this week to be the benchmark for the season ahead we are in for another year of tasty NFL action that will leave our mouths watering for months to come.
